CMS and ONC collaborate with the CDC to ensure that EHR Meaningful Use not only benefits healthcare by improving the quality, safety, and efficiency of healthcare delivery, but also benefits public health by promoting the use of EHR systems to: Improve the completeness and efficiency of case reporting through electronic laboratory reporting (ELR), Protect against vaccine preventable diseases through timely data transfer to immunization information systems (IIS), and Detect and respond to outbreaks through near real-time data transfer to syndromic surveillance (SS) systems.
