Highlights:

  • In order to build a future defined by health equity, it's important to understand the past and how injustices have created health disparities.
  • Pre-pandemic, the industry was skirting around the issue of health equity and healthcare disparities. Evidence was starting to emerge that health inequities were leading to large gaps in care access and outcomes. Understanding these concepts was important for understanding the social determinants of health, which most health stakeholders agreed were important for achieving value-based care.
  • Now, racial health disparities and health equity are at the center of nearly every health policy conversation. Addressing the upstream factors that have driven disparities is a key part of mitigating the current crisis and making sure another tragedy, disproportionately born by Black and Brown bodies, does not happen again.
