There is a risk involved with using term, social determinants of health (SDoH), in consideration of accute problems. SDoH needs to be used in addressing long-term fixes.
What are the underlying systemic conditions that need to be reconfigured in order to improve the individual, the community and the overall health of all people in the United States?
How to address the on-the-ground neccesary small-scale social interventions, while keeping focus on the greater issues that perpetuate injustice and disease.
In a speech, HHS Secretary Alex Azar described the dichotomy between individual-level “social needs” and community-level “social determinants." Azar stated that "we can't simply write a prescription for healthy meals, a new home, or clean air", but WHY NOT? He then went on to imply that in the future Medicaid may allow hospitals to pay for housing, healthy food, and other services. SO YES WE CAN.
