The National Academy of Medicine (NAM) will hold its 50th annual meeting on Saturday through Monday, October 17-19, 2020 by virtual platform.
Sunday, October 18th will feature Interest Group Meetings. Interest Groups allow NAM members from different disciplines and sections to convene on pertinent and interdisciplinary subjects. During the Annual Meeting, each Interest Group organizes and leads a panel of scholars to discuss current and global challenges affecting science, medicine, technology, and health.
This year, for the first time, we are pleased to present the NAM Interest Group programs to the public audience and welcome anyone with an interest at the intersection of human health and public policy to attend. The 2020 topics include:
- Medical Education and the Twin Pandemics: COVID 19 and Structural Racism
- Neuropsychiatry in the (Post) COVID-19 World
- Underlying Causes of the COVID‐19 Pandemic and Climate Change, as Well as the US/Global Responses to these Challenges
Monday, October 19th is the symposium on Confronting Urgent Threats to Human Health & Society: COVID-19 and Climate Change. We will open with a keynote address by Bill Gates, co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The address titled “Crises, Fast and Slow,” will reflect on COVID-19, climate change, and the imperative for global collaboration. The first session will explore the state of the COVID-19 pandemic, including virus emergence, the impact of the pandemic, and US and global preparedness and response. The second session will explore the environmental, societal, and individual impacts of climate change on human health. The meeting will also include the President's Forum, which will address the role of science and policymaking in responding to global crises. We anticipate lively discussion among the speakers and with the attendees.
