Practitioners in public health, behavioral health and correctional administrators play a critical role in addressing the opioid epidemic, as individuals involved in the criminal legal system are disproportionately at risk of having an opioid use disorder (OUD) and have higher rates of opioid overdose upon release. Implementing a Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) program for OUD in correctional facilities presents a unique public health opportunity to address the ongoing opioid epidemic and reduce overdose deaths among individuals with OUD upon their release. Experts who have successfully implemented a MAT program in jails and prisons will discuss the public health implications of the initiatives and strategies for public health departments to build partnerships with the criminal legal system to best inform program design and implementation. They will also discuss how initiating, maintaining and supporting MAT programs in correctional settings can reduce the critical public health concern of overdoses overall. |
