Summary Notes from LGT Meeting of 08/09/19

About 50 LGT members participated during the course of the 90-minute meeting. There was a high level of interest and engagement throughout, as there has been on previous calls.

The meeting began with self-introductions, then a review of previous discussions by the group co-leader, Dave Walsh, and an overview of NIC and its activities by the other co-leader, Daniel Stein.

By the end of the call, the group identified an initial project with which to focus the LGT member’s expertise and engagement which could serve as a model for addressing additional cross-sector issues.  Details still need to be nailed down, but there was consensus that the project should address an issue that is fundamental to all of our collective work and applies to all domains and programs: Identity proofing/authentication, and patient/client management. A subgroup agreed to work on developing a template and approach to highlight the key issues and opportunities.

The group also continued its ongoing discussion about the role of NIEM and FHIR, understanding their differences and differing uses, but also recognizing that each one is growing in importance in different domains. Understanding their differences, how they can complement each other and how/whether they can be harmonized would be helpful – and could lead to an LGT contribution to on-the-ground practice.

There was also discussion about convening LGT members at two upcoming conferences, MESC in Chicago and SHIEC outside of Washington, DC. The group also briefly reviewed a new one-page document spelling out LGT’s purpose and strategy, and briefly discussed the need for us to delineate “what constitutes success” for us.

Suggestions for next meeting on 08/16:

  • Ask for a volunteer who is going to each aforementioned conference, MESC and SHIEC, to organize a get-together of LGT members who are also attending.
  • Review the one-pager explaining LGT’s purpose and strategy to get input for any changes. One goal is to ensure that the group’s conversations and activities keep members interested.
  • Create a subgroup to delineate “what constitutes success” for LGT group, with a brief use case to illustrate each one. What are our “products?” White papers? Proofs of concept?
