The Opioid Use Disorder Prevention Playbook

The National Interoperability Collaborative (NIC) is proud to have a unique publication that shines a spotlight on the critical role that prevention should play in addressing our nation’s opioid epidemic, including strategies – or “plays” – that communities can replicate or adapt for real-time use.

The Opioid Use Disorder Prevention Playbook is derived from the growing number of efforts by practitioners, researchers and policy-makers around the country to “get upstream” of this national crisis, in addition to providing treatment and saving lives.

    I love the playbook. I have one suggestion. I feel we need to educate our veterinaians about the problem and include mandates for them to use the PDMP.

    Webinar-Getting Upstream of the Opioid Crisis - The Critical Role of Prevention: Karen Smith broke apart California so that you can see County Imapct.  It was a good way to show the rurual effect. She indicated there are over 40 entiites and multiple task groups trying to use as many tools with mutually reinforcing activities.  Karen stated, "You need all of the plays in the Playbook...".

    E-prescribing needs to be included in this playbook to address script diversion and harmonize workflows. Many states have EPCS mandates or are considering them, and now the feds are looking at it.

       E-Prescribing gives healthcare professionals in all care settings safer and more efficient electronic prescription management, which increases medication adherence and reduces prescription fraud.  Do you think that it ties into Play 5?

        When you look at the low EPCS uptake rates by prescribers I think it needs to be explicitely called out.

    Why isn't electronic prescribing included?  It's a process that can be used to prevent fraud, minimize workflow disruptions and will soon be required for Part D beneficiaries.

      Is anyone leveraging their PDMP's to accomplish same / other goals? It seems to me that eprescribing and PDMP's should have a lot in common.
