Daniel Heimpel, Publisher of The Chronicle of Social Change, will discuss major child welfare developments relating to: implementation of the Family First Prevention Services Act; new federal funds to pay for legal representation of children in juvenile dependency proceedings; and the system’s increased reliance on relative caregivers.

Adam Pertman, President of the National Center on Adoption and Permanency and author of the book “Adoption Nation,” will focus in particular on how information-sharing across domains can contribute to the success of these efforts as well as to better outcomes for children and families generally. 

About the Presenters 

Daniel HeimpelDaniel Heimpel, Publisher, The Chronicle of Social Change

Daniel Heimpel is the president and founder of Fostering Media Connections, a national non-profit news organization dedicated to issues facing vulnerable children youth and their families, an educator and an award-winning journalist.

He has taught graduate students on the intersection of journalism and child policy at USC’s Sol Price School of Public Policy, U.C. Berkeley’s Goldman School of Public Policy and the University of Pennsylvania’s School of Social Policy and Practice. In addition, through the Journalism for Social Change Massive Open Online Course, offered on the edX learning platform, Heimpel has trained thousands of students globally.

Heimpel has written and produced stories about vulnerable children for Newsweek, The Los Angeles Daily News, LA Weekly, The Seattle Times, The Oprah Winfrey Network, KPCC and KCRW among many others. This coverage has garnered him journalism awards from the Children’s Advocacy Institute, The Los Angeles Press Club, The North American Resource Center for Child Welfare, The National Association of
Social Workers, The Child Welfare League of America and California Mental Health Advocates for Children and Youth, and The California Social Work Archives among others.

Adam PertmanAdam Pertman, President, The National Center on Adoption and Permanency 

Adam Pertman is a Senior Consultant to Stewards of Change Institute (SOCI), where his roles include Coordination and Communications Director of NIC. Previously, he was a Pulitzer-nominated journalist with the Boston Globe, and then a leading expert in his field as head of the Donaldson Adoption Institute. Pertman is also President of the National Center on Adoption and Permanency, whose mission is to move child welfare to a new paradigm focused on enabling children and families to succeed. Pertman has given hundreds of keynotes and trainings across the U.S. and internationally. He has appeared widely in the media in this country and others, and has received numerous awards for his work for children and families. His book Adoption Nation was reviewed as “the most important book ever written on the subject.”
