Access to affordable housing continues to decline as rent and the cost of homes continues to increase, and the wage gap hits record highs. There is this belief across the United States that if you “pull yourself up by bootstraps” and work hard you will get ahead, however, data shows that it isn’t the unwillingness to work hard to get ahead. It’s a plethora of interconnected challenges related to the policies and systems that are put in place around things like affordable housing, health, and education.
Data shows that when people have access to affordable housing, they are healthier, have better job opportunities, and can provide a stable environment for their children. With this information, where is the public support to improve policies and systems to help fix these issues that so many people face? Why is there such a large stigma on this population of people and how can this stigma be changed? What are your thoughts on what can be done around these issues?
