Last year the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) published its first version of the U.S. Core Data for Interoperability (USCDI), which defines "data classes" and elements for exchange in healthcare. Primarily focused on clinical information it also includes demographics relevant to matching. Below are the elements USCDI v1 lists for the patient demographics data class:

  • First Name
  • Last Name
  • Previous Name
  • Middle Name (including middle initial)
  • Suffix
  • Birth Sex
  • Date of Birth
  • Race
  • Ethnicity
  • Preferred Language
  • Address
  • Phone Number

There's a separate data class for provenance that lists:

  • Author
  • Author Time Stamp
  • Author Organization

There are some unknowns with these elements and not all have associated standards at this time. What does the NIC community think about the current list and applicability to cross-domain person matching?
