John Smith-Jones got hooked on opioids a year ago, after being injured at his warehouse job. One day, after falling asleep at the wheel and totaling his car, he is rushed to the hospital by ambulance. John lives just above the poverty line and has no insurance, so he’s familiar with the emergency room; it’s where he and his 10-year-old son, who has severe asthma, get most of their healthcare when they need it. Today, John receives treatment for minor injuries in the ambulance, then again in the hospital. The next day, he’s charged in court with driving while under the influence and reckless endangerment. Because of the charges John’s son is placed in foster care and, as a result, has to change schools.
